Open Science Explained: Why it matters and How to Get Started​

On 29th May 2025, the Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure (PSDI) hosted a webinar titled “Introduction to Open Science”, presented by Dr Cerys Willoughby. The session addressed the ongoing reproducibility crisis in research and introduced Open Science as a powerful response.

The webinar explored the core principles of Open Science, highlighting how transparency, accessibility, and FAIR data practices can foster collaboration and trust in science. It also showcased real-world examples, discussed the role of infrastructures like PSDI, and offered practical steps toward a more open and inclusive research culture.

Abstract: This webinar provided an introduction to Open Science, a game-changer for researchers and society at large – if only we could persuade the science community to engage. The session explored the core principles of Open Science, highlighting the role of infrastructures like PSDI in driving progress. We explored how Open Science promoted accessibility, ensuring that research was available not just to scientists but to everyone, fostering transparency, collaboration, and meaningful discussions on critical issues. The webinar showcased successful examples of Open Science in action and examined its impact. Additionally, we discussed practical steps for making science more open, including the significance of FAIR principles. Finally, we identified key stakeholders and explored ways to cultivate a collaborative research culture.
